Trip to China!

I'll be going to Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai, China in March!

My main objective in coming along on this trip is to take great photos; To document the beauty & wonder of the location, and of course, be sure to get photos of the people we're going with. To me, nothing can help you keep a memory better than a photograph.

I stopped at Borders bookstore and bought an Eyewitness Travel book that contains info on both Shanghai and Beijing. Perfect combo book! I opted on buying this book instead of one on each city. There's only so much I can travel with - especially when I rely on bringing the smallest bag possible.

I used to think I was a travel snob (one who would never rely on one of these books, and go with the flow instead) but friends bringing them along have changed my mind. There is no shame in bringing information with you on a trip. In fact, I would not recommend going without researching. Especially when you are unfamiliar with the language of the location.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend following them step by step. When you're on a trip, be sure to keep moving. You only live once! Take opportunities that come at you, while still playing it safe. And use the guide book for suggestions if you find yourself looking for more to do. I also love reading about the history of these locations. When you're walking the streets of a new city you've never been to, you can stumble upon important historical locations or works of art that can tell you a lot about the city, about the people there, and about their culture & aesthetic. You'll return from your trip a much wiser person.

I'm curious what the consensus is on Travel books? So many options: FrommersLonely PlanetFodor's, what else? What do you prefer? Do you stick with one brand? Or none at all?

A Disney family vacation Travel Agent

I made this connection through twitter. My best friend from high school is obsessed with Disney (@vintagedisney), and was friends with @TripsByManny on twitter. She recommended me when he was needing a logo.

Here is what we came up with.

No pretty pictures on this post

But it's still inspiring if you read.

I wanted to share a site that I found to be an instant intrigue for me.

I'm the type of person that forms an opinion very quickly, possibly too quickly. I have no attention span, if it were up to me to hire designers it would be rough for anyone to get through my judgement. I wouldn't even make it. I'm not saying I dislike most everything, just that if you don't put the best thing in front of me before any other visual image, then I'll move along in less than 10 seconds. That first impact is everything!
But, I think with the computer age - more and more people are equally as distracted.

So at the same time, I'm not sure why I instantly love this. Because there's not a whole lot of very mature and organized design going on. Maybe that's exactly why it draws my interest.

1. It's called Barstool Romantic. the name itself already scores a few cool points.

2. The about link reads "The Barstool Romantic celebrates the wanderers, explorers, vagabonds, beats, carousers, rebels, hell-raisers and originals of the world. Those great ideas of freedom and the open road; drinking, laughing and loving like hell; getting out there and into it."
My thoughts: Right on... amazing.. this is what I'm dreaming, living, and striving to live like daily. I value freedom and curiosity for the world way too much.

Scroll down a bit.

3. “ I am sending you
postcards from a place
where I am not.

We’re not tourists, we’re travelers

a tourist is someone who
thinks about going home the
moment they arrive

whereas a traveler
might not come
back at all.”

Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky

BAM!

i love you.

4. oh but wait.. there's also a Diane Arbus photo further down the stream... affirmed!

p.s. I found it through Joanna Goddard's blog.

Teresafied - Seattle trip

A while back I took a trip to Seattle for fun, with a few friends. I was so behind that I never saw that my friend put up her photos from the trip. Here they are! You can see me in a lot of pictures, which is pretty exciting/scary for me because I rarely see myself in photos.

May = travel month

I hope this trend continues for a long time..

Last weekend I was in Birmingham.

I just got back from a 4 day shoot in Dallas and Houston. (I know, all that was in April technically, but it's so close)

I'll possibly be going to Covington, LA in a couple of weeks for a shoot..

And then straight to Seattle for 4 days. straight pleasure vacation.

A short week back in Jackson.

Possibly I'll be in New Orleans for a couple of days for a shoot, and then stay down there for Melissa and Jody's wedding for a few days.

Then straight to Birmingham to see my sister's baby!
All so exciting! I LOVE it!

Is This Your Luggage?

A very neat project. For now there's only 5 suitcases, but I could see myself browsing this website for a while if there were more. It's entertaining to see what people packed, and think about where they were going. I know that when I pack, I think pretty carefully about what I'm bringing!

Brandon's Japan photos

I went to Japan as an ambassador representing Birmingham in high school, and went with some of my best friends. Here is me, alison, and teresa at a tea ceremony. Who knows why i look so angry - but it was really cool to see all the photos, because all of mine were pretty bad. This was before the days of digital photography!
