Day 120

el2_120

So, yes...this is Winslow...again. I have other stuff from Louisiana but none of it is up to par. I have tons of Slo and a couple more of Damien but blah blah blah. There is a limit.

I'm bored and need some damn work.

Let us get some portraits scheduled. I had a decent reply from the last mention of it..time to solidify. Yell if you want a portrait. I've got the list somewhere from last time. Feel free to yell again.

Blah blah blah.

MAKE IT SO!

Day 118

Quick and dirty. Another shot from Winslow's treetastrophy. Boring but I like the light.

This is the dude who lives across the street from bottletree. Came out while I was shooting Damien.

Day 115

el2_115

Jonathan Purvis sitting in for a test shot. It was testing for the shot I posted on Damien Jurado but of course it looks nothing like it. Also, this was the one sheet of 4x5 I slightly mis-loaded, hence its odd framing.

Also, a couple of weeks ago I mentioned / posted my wall of photos I keep at the studio and thought I'd post and update. I added a few polaroids and two 16x20s of recent 4x5 shots (damien + gregory). Stephanie is in there to show scale.

Teacher Appreciation week

May 3 - 9 is Teacher Appreciation week. Do you remember a favorite teacher that made a difference in your life. I remember several. My forth grade teacher Mrs. Panelfeno was so wonderful. She had a smile every morning. She always had a surprise for us. A candy kiss on our desk after lunch, a special story we could listen to her read. She was dedicated to each student!
In honor of all of our teacher and their dedication I made a teacher "Dream Girl" doll. I am only making a few of them. You can find them at my Etsy shop at http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=24160442 or at my Lollishop at

Day 114

el2_114

this is bill pyne. i'll update this post later with details of this amazing guy who takes care of us at our photo lab.

Brain Twittering

If I could twitter with my brain, it would be a very BAD IDEA.

but this is a neat article, none the less. And very exciting for patients.

I'm kind of getting sick of the word "Twitter," by the way.

Rex Manning Day

Only the best day ever! from the film, Empire Records (Regency 1995)
No, we can't fight today, not on Rex Manning Day!!

Everything's been so good; I'm having my own personal Rex Manning Day.

Day 113

el2_113 Damien Jurado

So I had the pleasure last night to see Damien Jurado perform at Bottletree and it was, as I'd expect, a very nice night of music I completely love. Threw in a couple I didn't know which is always nice too.

More to the point, I also was able to take a few portraits of him before the show. Super, super nice and laid back guy. The nice part was he was easy to shoot despite his protests of not being a good model. The important part is he was comfortable in his skin, or at least seemed to be, and just...was.

So, this is my favorite portrait of him. You may see another shot or two of him here, but this is the winningest winner.

Thanks for your time, Damien.

Day 111

el2_111

I keep on meaning to have more to say.

I'll say this. I met Bill from my lab (Richard Photo Lab in Los Angeles) yesterday and hung with him for a minute today. Solid dude. Took two frames of 4x5 of him while he was here. Ironically, I'll be processing it myself instead of sending it to Bill. Funny how that works.

Man, I'm hungry.

50 Jobs in 50 States

I don't know how many people are keeping up with this guy, but it's a very cool idea. If you check out this post you'll see that Daniel ended up staying with my parents! He's in my old room actually.

My mom has been trying to think of southern foods to cook him. And I'm sure my parent's are loving the company!

Sunday we talked on the phone a little bit, he's a super nice guy, and we're actually very close in age. I wish I had his idea first!

Check out his website at livingthemap.com.

पीए Pieces

I think that I am finding I fit into the "commercial photographer" category. I don't especially like event, or portraiture. Mainly because I have a hard time with people. I like to pay attention to details and mood. If it's a very specific shot of a person in a costume or in an elaborate setting, for some reason that's much more comfortable for me. Because it's somehow more ok to be a weirdo. And the person is more like an object or doll. The amount of setting up and creating it, makes it so much more than just pressing a button, and it is! It is art!

I do enjoy food photography (what small amount I've done officially), and certain interesting product shots, or small scale settings.

But lighting, it's all about lighting.

Day 110

Gregory Price.

This is one of several 4x5 frames from this weekend. I'm still pretty addicted to it.

If anyone wants their photo taken with ye olde 4x5 let me know. I'm down to shoot you with it.

Please email me if you wanna.

Day 109

el2_109

A foggy day a while back on the day some friends had a baby.

In the making

Just thought I would share some pictures of my latest doll and the steps I take to make them.
I start with several sketches of the design I have in mind. For this one I want a sweet face and angel wings. I sketched out 3 ideas, then make a paper pattern from a sketch. Next I plan the fabrics...I just love this chalkboard design I bought a while ago. That will be a part of her dress!
Then I cut the fabrics and sew and bead as I go. Look for the finished results at my shop soon!
www.mommylion.etsy.com and http://www.lollishops.com/mommy-lion-design
If you would like to reserve one, please let me know soon. I will only be making a few! I have to make one for my daughters 2ND grade teacher...shhhhh!!!

Day 108

el2_107

So I don't time to edit this properly as I need to get into the darkroom (at midnight. I'm already tired) so I'm just posting it so I can get to work.

Steph at home in Monroe.

I shot more 4x5 today of Winslow at his home. Hopefully I'll get something cool out of it.

[ed] this was misplaced and originally posted on day 106, so im moving it to 108 and posting a new image on 107.

Day 107

el_107

Coupla things.....this is David. His shoe on the left is not in the frame and there is extra room beside his shoulder. I'm pretty sure this is because my tripod BLOWS and it shifted when I put the film holder in place. Oh well.

Either way I'm happy with the sharpness (way to sit still david). It was a half second exposure.

I'm really liking the Speed Graphic these days.

Steph is in town. Chances are my posts will be more brief while she is around.

Oh and I beefed up yesterday and posted two images (oops) so Steph from yesterday (#2) is moving to tomorrow so I can post David today. More shots of winslow, a couple of which I really like.

Mothers Day Pin

It is time to think about mom and all she has done for us. She is there when we are sick, when we are excited, and when we are sad. I created this little mother and child pin just for your mom! You can find her at www.mommylion.etsy.com

Day 106

el2_106

So it seems to be a 4x5 kind of week. Pardon the composition...I was shooting handheld at 4.7 around sunset in the shade WAY under an appropriate distance for ignoring parallax error.

Anyway....can't get enough E.T.

Day 104

el2_104

My friend Winslow had a tree fall on his house. This is the aftermath. There is an alternate frame that may surface eventually.

To view this image in more detail, please see the bigger version here.

Google Latitude

So I don't have an iphone, I have a blackberry. But now my phone can do what Loop does! And I'm so impressed and amazed! I am really terrible with directions.. so it's very handy in reality as well.

Is This Your Luggage?

A very neat project. For now there's only 5 suitcases, but I could see myself browsing this website for a while if there were more. It's entertaining to see what people packed, and think about where they were going. I know that when I pack, I think pretty carefully about what I'm bringing!

Mr. Stain on Junk Alley

I watched this on Kodocha, it was a DVD extra. It was very creepy to me... I don't know what the other episodes were like, but wow!

Day 103

el2_103

So in a bit of a break from normal stuff here, I figured I would post a random chunk from my studio. It vaguely reminds me of those flickr groups where people post everything they keep in their pockets / bags. Except this is a corkboard of polaroids, prints, and old crap from family archives. So really they aren't all the similar.

Things you see here. The first, most 100% awesome, is the photo of my sister from good old school days. You'll know it by her trapezoidal hair.

A list of random other things, in no particular order.

Prints from my trip to Uganda, a polaroid of me next to a polaroid of steph, a handful of david, bob miller, bryan's kid noah, my mom, my parents, me and my dad, steph again, celeste, rabbi igber, mr p's, my cousin jamie, her parents looking like they are from that 70s show, caleb, my grandparents, gregory, photobooths of me + nicole and me + steph, my grandmother looking sour, and a couple more. this is constantly growing, very slowly. shot with my half frame.

Day 101

el2_101

So it is apparently and E.T. weekend! I also shot 4x5 today, including a portrait of E.T. as well as E.T. with Sadie the cutest ever dog.

Trying to think of other relevant information. I'm having a good time. That's about it.

Also, I've thought about shooting a series of E.T. enduring modern life. Id est, he has his house foreclosed upon or grocery shopping.

Day 100

el2_100

Long story. I bought an E.T. for my sister for her birthday (nic, if you see this...Surprise!) and to make it operational it required some surgery. Lots of corrosion on some wires. Anyway. There is a whole set of ET getting a serious once over. Here is one.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Day 097

el2_097

Yet another addition to my series of people sleeping. I don't feel like typing.

Anyone know of non-profits or other groups helping people in or around Tokyo? I am headed there in June and I'd love to shoot while I'm there.

Monday, April 6, 2009

Day 096

el2_096

So I am not a huge fan of lighting. Part of that is that I have not made a point of acquiring much gear as I very much prefer finding light, you know? So...I guess I won't ever like it more unless I try more things with manufacturing it. To this end, we went down to the basement of the studio and shot around a little bit. Nothing spectacular. Also, I hate vapor lights. The shot was 75% vapor and the color looked like crap so I went with my comfort zone of black and white. Why am I telling you three people this?

I've got to make a push. I just need to figure out what I'm pushing, and who is on the other side of whatever it is I am pushing with. That, my friends, was a really shitty metaphor. Or, at the least, a bad sentence.

So, there is Rob. I post him also to the end of promoting ROB CULPEPPER WEEK over at poptpop.com.

p.s. I'm sure Rob won't be too happy I posted one of him not looking more like a badass. Oh well. All I can say is sorry, boss.
